New York State Asbestos Testing & Inspection
Asbestos is actually a natural, fibrous mineral, but when items are manufactured with minerals (like amosite, chrysotile, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite) it can cause serious health issues over the long term. Asbestos exposure is linked to lung diseases such as asbestosis, pleural effusions (fluid buildup between your chest wall and the lungs), lung cancerand mesothelioma. The good news is you can lower your risk and avoid exposure through asbestos testing and proper asbestos abatement (removal of asbestos). So where can asbestos be in your home or business? Some items include:
Which do you need help with…
- Roofing shingles
- Outdoor siding
- Textured paint and patching compounds like Plaster
- Vinyl floor tiles and/or the backing on vinyl sheet flooring and adhesives
- Furnaces and gaskets
- Pipe insulation
Now, the components mentioned above are only some items that could have asbestos. It can appear in other products too. For example, it’s also in vermiculite, which can be in anything from attic insulation to potting soil. Plus, asbestos fibers are so tiny that they can’t be seen by the naked eye. That’s why there are two kinds of sample tests used. One test – bulk samples – involves Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). This test is used to determine if you have any materials containing asbestos in your home or office. The other test – air samples – incorporates TEM and Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM). Air samples are designed to see if the air is contaminated from the asbestos being disturbed, cracked, damaged, etc. Furthermore, it’s used most often for clearance after an abatement to be sure the air is safe, and at acceptable levels, after the asbestos removal.
